What it’s about :

In the aftermath of the Demon’s Breath addiction that ruined some of her schoolmates’ lives, Kaylee needs time to learn to trust again. She and Nash are trying to repair their relationship, but things get even more complicated when Nash’s ex, Sabine, suddenly pops back into his life.

Of course, Sabine isn’t exactly human either. And she’s not above using her own scary abilities to get whatever she wants – or, more precisely, to get back Nash. When a series of murders occurs, Kaylee can’t help but suspect the new girl – which isn’t to help her relationship with Nash, either…

I really, really enjoy this series! Sure, I wasn’t a fan of book number two, but book three was a page turner and My Soul to Steal continues in the same direction. There’s less action, but there’s still a lot happening. It’s also a good change in rhythm : it allows us to get to know Kaylee, Nash and the other characters more instead of focusing on action sequences.

I loved the addition of Sabine and all the stories her arrival created. She’s not portrayed as a likable character, but I’ve always thought that characters who stand in the “grey zone” are the most interesting. She certainly shook Kaylee’s beliefs, and without spoiling it, I’ll say this : I love the discussion Kaylee has with Tod on who Nash belongs to. I’m not saying he’s wrong or right, or that Kaylee is, but I think there might have been some truth there.

Vincent has a way of creating characters and giving them a lot of room to grow through the series. I still feel that, on this point, Kaylee is similar to Faythe from the Shifters series. She starts off scared and naive, as anybody would in her situation, but she evolved from then. She’s a lot more mature and responsible, and think her actions through. I’m also glad she doesn’t depend on Nash to control her abilities anymore. She’s becoming more and more a kick-ass heroine, and I’m all for that!
